In 2023, the 5th Meeting of the Reportha network on Environmental History, will take place from 19 to 21 October at the University of Minho, in Braga, and will have as its main subject: Energy and socio-environmental challenges. It is intended to create a broad space for discussion around the relationship between energy sources and resources, on the one hand, and human societies and the environment, on the other, in the past as well as in the present.

Over time, in different geographic spaces and historical contexts, we can find dominant energy sources in human activity. The relationship between natural resources, the organization of society and the its technological capacity has conditioned the recognition and exploitation of the most important energy sources and resources. In certain historical and cultural contexts human or animal energy was dominant, while in others the intense use of hydraulic and wind energy was fundamental. In both cases, the association with fire — obtained through the burning of wood or coal — was constant. With the advent of the steam engine, there was a significant increase in the consumption of resources such as coal. And since the beginning of the 20th century, electrical energy, in association with oil and other fossil fuels, has become the dominant system, leading to an unprecedented production of electrical energy. Electricity thus appears as a characteristic dimension of the industrial civilization, and it can be obtained from hydraulic or nuclear sources, but also from wind, solar, tidal, and other renewable sources. This evolution corresponded to diverse consumption models and policies (family and industrial, public and private, coexisting or not).

The relationship between the exploitation of energy resources and the technological capacity of the communities had long-term environmental repercussions, such as deforestation, alteration of mining exploration areas, conflicts in the use of water and solar installations, changes in landscapes due to the implementation of small and/or large production units. Currently, environmental issues focus on subjects such as inequality or injustices in access to energy and energy resources; landscape alterations resulting from in situ exploration; environmental pollution; available energy resources, between scarcity and abundance; supply and transport networks; promoting the use of sustainable and renewable sources; perceptions and resistance to the imposition of certain energy models; concepts of renewable resources and sustainable energy sources. In short, it seems urgent to analyze how these questions can be applied, or not, to different historical and geographical contexts and thus contribute to a better understanding of our present.

In this way, researchers from the most varied scientific areas, interested in the theme of Environmental History, are invited to participate in this 5 Meeting, by sending proposals for papers, or posters, contributing to the scientific enrichment of main thematic: Energy and socio-environmental challenges. Simultaneously, proposals on any other topic related to Environmental History will also be accepted.

Em 2023, o V Encontro da rede Reportha decorrerá de 19 a 21 de outubro na Universidade do Minho e terá como tema: Energia e desafios socioambientais. Pretende-se criar um amplo espaço de discussão em torno da relação entre fontes e recursos energéticos, por um lado, e as sociedades humanas e o ambiente, por outro, no passado e no presente.

Ao longo do tempo, em diferentes espaços geográficos e contextos históricos, encontrámos fontes de energia dominantes na atividade humana. A relação entre os recursos naturais, a organização da sociedade e a respetiva capacidade tecnológica condicionou o reconhecimento e a exploração das fontes e recursos energéticos mais utilizados. Em certos contextos histórico-culturais a energia humana ou animal foi a dominante, noutros a utilização intensa da energia hidráulica e eólica era fundamental. Em ambos os casos, a associação com o fogo — obtido através da queima da madeira ou do carvão — foi uma constante. Com o aparecimento da máquina a vapor assistiu-se a um aumento significativo no consumo de recursos como o carvão. E desde os inícios do século XX, a energia elétrica, em associação com os petróleos e outros combustíveis fósseis, tornou-se no sistema dominante, conduzindo a uma produção de energia elétrica sem precedentes. A eletricidade aparece assim como uma dimensão caraterística da civilização industrial, obtida a partir de fontes hidráulicas ou nucleares, mas também de origem eólica, solar, das marés, e outras fontes renováveis.  Esta evolução correspondeu a modelos e a políticas de consumo diferenciados (familiar e industrial, publico e privado, coexistentes ou não.

A relação entre a exploração dos recursos energéticos e a capacidade tecnológica das comunidades teve repercussões ambientais na longa duração, como a desflorestação, a alteração de áreas de exploração mineira, conflitos nos usos de água e de instalações solares, alterações das paisagens frente à implantação de pequenas e/ou grandes unidades produtoras. Atualmente, as questões ambientais centram-se em temas como a desigualdade ou as injustiças no acesso à energia e aos recursos energéticos; alterações paisagísticas decorrentes da exploração in situ; a poluição ambiental; recursos energéticos disponíveis, entre a escassez e abundância; as redes de aprovisionamento e transporte; a defesa do uso de fontes sustentáveis e renováveis; as perceções e as resistências à imposição de determinados modelos energéticos; conceitos de recursos renováveis e de fontes de energia sustentáveis. Em suma, afigura-se urgente analisar de que forma estas questões se podem aplicar, ou não, a diferentes contextos históricos e geográficos e dessa forma contribuir para a melhor compreensão do nosso presente.

Deste modo, convidam-se os investigadores, das mais variadas áreas científicas, interessados na temática da História do Ambiente a participar neste V Encontro, através do envio de propostas de comunicações, ou de posters, contribuindo para o enriquecimento científico em torno da temática: Energia e desafios socioambientais. Simultaneamente, propostas sobre qualquer outro tema relacionado com História Ambiental serão igualmente aceites.
